Of defining love

One of my friends put a link of a very sweet, meaningful and touching advertisement called Beautifully Imperfect in his yahoo messenger’s status last night. The advertisement who had been directed by Yasmin Ahmad, a well known Malaysian director, for Singapore is about a wife who looks at relationships from a different light of perception through the eulogy of a woman who’s recently lost her husband.

I think I can relate to her when she said that David was a heavy snorer but she felt relieved because she knew hearing the snores mean David was still alive. My dad snores a lot and so loud that sometimes I can still hear his snores from the living room while watching television. Still remember I did write about how I was afraid to sleep just because I was afraid I will die while sleeping? And I did read somewhere about how dangerous snoring is that the breathing can suddenly stop and cause death. Thus, every time when my dad stops snoring, the idea of the old man died while he was sleeping haunted me and I know I am being ridiculously absurd.

As for the advertisement, I second her when she said the little imperfections are the one that make them perfect. Imperfection comes naturally with human being as not a single body in this world is perfect. Due to disillusionment among far too many individuals who create love stories and movies, almost every one in the world dreams of a perfect partner and I am of no exception. Perhaps the first step in breaking the dream is by tampering the whole idea of a true love as most of the people out there are obviously oblivious to the reason to love. Their preference for money, looks and etc continue to prove that sometimes they are nothing more than individuals typically found in the dark back alleys with scant ersatz clothing soliciting for clients of dubious taste.

Here are some quotes that I find interesting when a group of professional people posed a question, ” What does love mean?” to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds ;

  • “When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love.”
  • “When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.”
  • “Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.”
  • “Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.”
  • “Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.”
  • “Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday.”
  • “Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.”
  • Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.”
  • “Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford.”
  • “You really shouldn’t say ‘I love you’ unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.”

Tyres and Ferrari.

Looking back over the previous races of the current season, Ferrari really needs to improve its race strategy, one thing that this team had always been proud of, no question of it. There are so many things that went wrong for them this year and it is absolutely outlandish to realize that the only 2 teams that are yet to score any points are Force India and Ferrari.

On top of the bad decisions made by Ferrari this year is in Sepang when Kimi drove with full wet tyres when the track was still hot and dry. Haven’t they get the idea that Malaysia is a country where the temperature and humidity rise so high that walking out for 5 minutes made a person feels as if he needed a shower? Thus, a few drops of rains definitely wouldn’t make any difference to the track as the condition will dry out so fast.

I don’t know who had made the awful decision on that day because as far as I know, usually the team will propose an idea but it’s all up to the driver to make the final decision. Maybe the bad call was made by Kimi or maybe the blame should go to the forecast because if the imminent heavy rain has fallen as forecasted, it would have been a good call. But I’m not going to talk about where should the blame goes to because I am confident that they will figure out some solutions to beat Brawn GP because the team has existed since before Ross Brawn was born, there’s a perspective to them.

What amazed me more here is that how the damn most high-tech tyres on earth used in each race play a very significant role in the performance of the car. The tyres bear only a superficial resemblance to a normal road tyre and they can only last for less than one race distance. Every team in the race use the same tyres as there’s only one manufacturer for formula one but what really make a big difference in every race strategy is the type of the tyres choose by the team to meet the condition in each race.

The tyre can be categorized into several types, determined by the compound of the rubber used. The ‘softness’ or ‘hardness’ of rubber compounds is varied for each race according to the known characteristics of the track. General speaking, every track has their own specific tyres but both compounds are available to each team at every GP and they have to use both specifications during the single race. That is for a dry condition.

aquaplaning

As for wet condition, there are intermediate and wet-weather tyres which have a full tread pattern that is mathematically designed to scrub the maximum amount of water possible from the track surface. A driver’s worst nightmare is a condition known as ‘aquaplaning’ in which the car is floating as a film of water builds up between the tyre and the track.

After the whole bad weekend in Malaysia, I hope Ferrari can still do a come back this weekend in Shanghai, China. All the best, Ferrari~ 🙂

I now understand more or less about life and death of a human. Though I think it is still unclear whether it’s a correct decision for me to subscribe to medicine, it is nevertheless enlightening to know how our own body evolved from a simple form such a cell to a more complicated one.

Early this year we have been exposed to a new subject called Thanatology which derived from the Greek language, Thanatos which means the personification of death. It’s a study of death among human beings and it describes bodily changes that accompany death and the after-death period.

Studying about this giant makes me feels small. Not only do they make me realized that human is so fragile that almost everything can cause death even our own body, they had given thought to many other things which I have yet to think independently. They also had provided me with a thought that if it’s our time to die, we can’t escape it no matter how hard we try and vice versa.

It’s nothing less than shocking to me when I began to comprehend the gravity of this idea. It makes me think of my own death and my love one’s. I admit that I was so busy trying to breathe in this world that the ferociously idea of death didn’t really crash down on me before this.

I still remember when I was a little kid there was someone in my neighbourhood who died when he was in deep sleep. Since that day, as naïve as I was, struggling to understand that at the moment, I refused to sleep, afraid that if I fell into a sleep I might die like the old man and I think it was that time that I started to learn how to have a night without a sleep.

What a race, Malaysia~

I was sleeping soundly before a loud noise of thunder crashed in the sky woke me up. I had a peek through the window and I could see that it’s raining heavily out there. It’s 2 hours before the race and I was wondering if it’s raining too in Malaysia because it’ll be a lot fun to watch F1 when it comes with the rain…

When the race started, the sky was overcast and gray but all the teams were using soft-dry tyres. None of them were using wet tyres even though after the first round of pit stop but Kimi, who had a quite late pit stop compared to the others had switched to wet tyres during his first pit stop. Thus, the commentators were saying that maybe it’s really going to rain in the next couple of minutes but surprisingly, other cars who pitted after him still opted to use dry tyres and everybody was wondering, was this some part of Ferrari strategy or Ferrari had made a bad decision again?

The race before that was kind of boring due to the lack of overtaking made by drivers and everybody was having a nice and safe race but just a few minutes after the first round of the pit stop, tiny drops had started to pour down and everybody was pitting again to change the tyres into full wet tyres. At this moment, I thought Kimi had a better chance to improve his position as he already had his wet tyres on but he didn’t improve so much. I have no idea why he can’t make it! Whoever in charge of race strategies for Ferrari is really sucks! Oh wait, wasn’t my beloved Schumi responsible for the job after they sacked Brawn? Sighed!

It’s kind of interesting to watch the race when the rain has started to pour because the teams were pitting so often, switching between dry, intermediate and fully wet tyres and there were a lot of overtaking too and timo glock was the famous guy when it comes to race strategies today as he chose intermediate tyres when everybody was on wet tyres and that kind of giving him a lot of advantages as he had increased his pace. Looking to that kind of strategies, I can see that there’s a lot of improvement from Toyota this season and at least one of the driver had won the podium for each race.

Just a few minutes after that, driving through the torrential rain has became almost impossible and I could listen from the radio team, someone had described it as ‘undrivable’ and as lighting was seen to struck around the circuit and visibility deteriorated, the race director, Charlie Whiting had decided to suspend the race until the weather improved. Ergo, the race was red flagged after 32 laps! It was the second time of my life that I watched the race had been stop due to rain. During the ‘pause’ a lot of funny scene can be seen. One of them was when due to unknown reason, Kimi’s car was in garage and a couple minutes after that, he was out of his racing suit and was seeing eating ice-cream in the garage! Haha~ he’s really enjoying his break. (some said that he was thinking whether to retire or not due to his car condition but for me, seeing the way he enjoyed his ice-cream and walked to the fridge happily looked like he’d already made his decision)

After about half an hour later, when the rain at least had began to stop, they made an announcement that the race was not going to be restarted. OMG! No, it couldn’t be happening. There were still 24 laps to go but as the darkness approach, so restarted was ruled out. Can’t they continue the race tomorrow??

In the end, they decided to choose the winner according to the driver position before the race had been stopped. Thus, this had make Jenson Button to continue with the victory today despite his poor start. Nick Heidfeld finished second, and Timo Glock was third and only half points were awarded to the winner since 75 percent of the race was not completed as a total of 42 laps had to be run to ensure the full points. What a race, Malaysia~

A quote from Nick Heidfield ; “Here, the rain is far from normal. When the Heavens open, everything disappears under water in no time.”
